8mm Mauser?. 24" barrel. SN: 996d 1WP51. A heavy–barrel free-rifle built on a WWII German K98 Mauser action, serial number 996, originally produced circa 1933–1945 and later converted into a dedicated single-shot Olympic-style target rifle. The muzzle measures 7.9mm, suggesting the rifle likely remained in 8mm Mauser configuration (unconfirmed). Features include an Olympic-grade diopter sight system, extended objective tube, and a custom anatomical walnut stock with deep thumbhole and palm shelf. Includes a spare 3-9x32 scope as well.
A brass plaque affixed to the stock bears Hungarian engraving commemorating the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and Lajos Papp, who won the Bronze Medal in the 300m Free Rifle, Three Positions event. The Hungarian text—written with several nonstandard spellings—translates to:
“1972 Munich Olympics – Third Place (Bronze Medal) – Presented to Lajos Papp.”
Included with the rifle are copies of correspondence with the Hungarian Shooting Federation, confirming Papp’s Olympic participation and discussing the possibility that this rifle may have been used or owned by him. The Federation notes that identifying the exact Olympic-used rifle is difficult; nevertheless, this example exhibits the correct configuration and setup used by Hungarian Olympic shooters during the period, and the plaque indicates direct association.
