Compelling mixed Civil War group combining Confederate civilian correspondence, Reconstruction-era loyalty documentation, and federal legislative print material. The March 1864 Virginia letter from a young woman (Nellie Henkel) to her brother in the army provides insight into home front conditions, education disruptions, and conscription effects, accompanied by its original cover bearing a Jefferson Davis Confederate stamp. The New Orleans “Office Provost Marshal” oath of allegiance document dated July 25, 1864, signed “L. Leontine,” reflects Union occupation policy and required civilian loyalty pledges in Louisiana following Federal control. The group is completed by a printed Union General Orders No. 257 (War Department, September 15, 1864), detailing Congressional legislation governing captured and abandoned Confederate property, a key aspect of wartime economic policy and early Reconstruction measures. The combination offers strong thematic coverage of civilian life, federal authority, and policy enforcement across both Confederate and Union spheres. Pickup & Shipping: Free pickup in Gardnerville, NV. FedEx Ground/Home Delivery within the continental U.S.: $30 + 1.5% insurance (unless waived in writing). Combined shipping available.

Condition

Good to very good overall; civilian letter with scattered staining, ink blotting, and areas of heavy bleed affecting legibility; cover worn with edge losses; oath document with fold wear, staining, and mounting remnants; printed General Orders complete with expected toning and handling wear.
