The lower margin bears the printed caption: “Catlin the Celebrated Indian Traveller and Artist, firing his Colt’s Repeating Rifle before a Tribe of Carib Indians in South America,” accompanied by an extended descriptive passage. The image is signed within the plate at lower left “G. Catlin Pinx.,” indicating Catlin as the original artist. Additional lower margin text appears to reference a Chester printer, likely reading “Drawn on stone & printed in oil colors by J. M. Gahey, Chester,” consistent with mid-to-late 19th century English provincial lithographic production. While not part of the well-known Day & Son London series, this example represents a period lithographic interpretation of Catlin’s work, produced for popular distribution.
