A fine mid-19th century example of patriotic American sailor scrimshaw, this 16-inch walrus tusk is engraved with the classical figure Columbia, a symbolic representation of the United States during the early republic and antebellum eras. She is shown seated on a pedestal with flowing robes, holding a liberty pole topped by a Phrygian cap, and leaning against a large striped shield—iconography closely tied to American ideals of liberty and national unity. The work likely dates to the 1850s–1860s, based on the stylistic dress, rendering technique, and composition. Such imagery was popular among whalemen and maritime craftsmen during the golden age of American whaling, with patriotic motifs often created as personal tributes or intended gifts. The tusk’s long, gently tapering form and clean execution suggest it was valued for decorative display. Length: ±16 in. Provenance: Estate of Ron Lerch.
