Scarce pair of Civil War–era covers associated with Johnson’s Island, the Union prisoner-of-war camp located on Lake Erie near Sandusky, Ohio, used to confine Confederate officers. Both covers are postmarked May 1865, after the war’s end but prior to prisoner release, and are addressed to California, illustrating long-distance correspondence from former prisoners. One example bears a clear oval “Prisoner’s Letter Examined” marking, reflecting official censorship procedures governing POW mail under wartime agreements. The group provides tangible postal history tied to one of the Union’s principal prison sites and demonstrates the continued administrative handling of prisoner correspondence at the close of the conflict. Pickup & Shipping: Free pickup in Gardnerville, NV. FedEx Ground/Home Delivery within the continental U.S.: $30 + 1.5% insurance (unless waived in writing). Combined shipping available.

Condition

Fair to Good, with notable edge wear, tears, losses, and visible repairs; one cover heavily worn at corners and edges, both showing age-related discoloration.
