US Model 1821 Eagle Head Artillery Officer’s Sword and absolutely beautiful scabbard by “Horstmann & Sons Makers, Philada.” This is a fairly standard pattern sword, probably made for the Mexican-American War or thereabouts, with a reeded bone grip, and a down-turned guard with a trophy of arms on it. The blue and gold blade has very simple decoration on it, and is straight, single edged. The scabbard is a beauty! It is brass, and very handsomely engraved on the upper half, and has an ornate frog button in the shape of a shield, as well as two hanging rings. The Horstmann logo is on an applied scroll shaped plaque on the reverse of the throat.  The area of the drag is also engraved with leaves, and terminates in a raised ornamental cap. Both the sword and the scabbard retain about 90% of their original gilding. The scabbard is stamped at the throat with the number 425. There is no inner throat. Dimensions: 37 inches long overall, with a 30 inch blade. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $75.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition

The outside of the sword is absolutely excellent, with both the hilt and scabbard retaining almost all of their original gilt. The blade retains most of its blue and faded gold, but is fairly dirty and hard to see. The bright portion of the blade is grey, and also fairly dirty, but the gold in particular is fully visible.
