World War I U.S. M1917 steel helmet retaining an unusual and visually striking hand-painted camouflage finish. The exterior is decorated in ochre, tan, reddish-brown, and black curvilinear patterns, creating an almost abstract flame-like design across the crown and brim. Such personalized camouflage treatments were occasionally applied by individual soldiers, training units, or post-war veterans for field concealment, parade, or commemorative purposes. The helmet retains its original rolled rim shell and appears to be of standard M1917 “Doughboy” configuration.
