U.S. Model 1917 steel helmet retaining remnants of its original textured olive drab finish, featuring a hand-painted 103rd Field Artillery insignia depicting a kicking mule and artillery shell beneath crossed camouflaged gun barrels, with “103 F.A.” and “Accuracy and Speed.” Above the insignia is the blue-and-green “YD” emblem of the 26th “Yankee Division.” The 103rd Field Artillery served with the 26th Division, one of the early American units to see sustained combat in France, participating in major engagements including Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne.
