7.5x54 French. 23" barrel. SN: FG36867. Blued finish, smooth walnut pistol gripped stock and forend. Bolt action fixed magazine rifle with military adjustable receiver mounted peep rear sight, hooded front sight, stacking bar, sling swivels and an old French leather sling. Matching numbers on receiver and stock, magazine floor plate mismatched. Missing the spike bayonet that stores in the forend of the rifle. Obverse of stock is carved with the name "CUONG", a common Vietnamese male given name. The MAS 36 was still the standard French military rifle during the waning days of the French control of Indochina. Large numbers of the rifles were used by French forces at the disastrous battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, which were subsequently captured and used by the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. The rifle is accompanied by a cotton National Liberation Front of South Vietnam (aka "Viet Cong") flag that measures 20"x30" and is purported to have been brought back from the Vietnam War with the rifle. The gun certainly has the look of a well used rifle from that conflict.

Good. Bore dark and dirty with visible rifling. Metal with traces of thinned blue and moderate amounts of surface oxidation and a mostly brown patina. Markings remain mostly legible. Mechanically functional action. Wood well worn with numerous bumps, dings and mars, as well as some chipped loss. The rifle definitely has the look of a Vietnam bring back and is well worn as would be expected. The flag shows moderate wear and some stains.
