German NEPA student dagger. The design of the dagger closely resembles that of SA and SS holbein style dress daggers. The difference is a simplified grip with no eagle, it has a bayonet type scabbard and frog, and finally the inscription reads "Mehr sein als scheinen" (Be modest but always excel). The back side of the blade is marked "Karl Burgsmüller of Berlin". This is an earlier example with nickel fittings. The Nationalpoltische Erziehungsanstalt (National Political Education Institute) were special residential schools designed to give the elite nazi youth the skills and ideology to be leaders in the state or army. They were set up in old army cadet schools, former monasteries, and castles. Students were grouped in army style companies and platoons with the teachers wearing uniforms and holding military style ranks. The students had to return the daggers to their school when they were done. As a result, they are likely more rare than even SS daggers.
