Interesting assembled lot of four Civil War–era patriotic covers, including illustrated Union propaganda designs featuring the American eagle, shield, and martial symbolism, as well as more pointed anti-secession imagery such as a gallows scene and caricatured figures intended to mock or condemn Confederate leadership. One cover prominently displays the slogan “What the South shall see!” with coffin imagery referencing prominent Southern figures, while another bears the phrase “The peculiar institution,” reflecting Northern commentary on slavery prior to and during the war. Additional examples include patriotic verse and iconography celebrating Union ideals and national identity. The group collectively illustrates the range of visual and political messaging used on Northern covers during the early war period, from overt propaganda to symbolic patriotic expression.
