A framed Civil War-era manuscript grouping consisting of a handwritten family annotation and a partially legible Reconstruction-era oath of allegiance document. The upper note identifies the lower manuscript as relating to “J.P. Tiers” and references a “report of physical condition while in federal prison at Point Lookout, Md.” together with an “oath of allegiance to U.S. after the surrender.” The note further identifies “T.A.G. Wade,” believed to be the justice of the peace who witnessed the oath, and states he was married to “Candace Tiers.”
The lower manuscript appears to be a handwritten post–Civil War Amnesty Oath executed in Mississippi and dated August 5, 1865. Portions of the text remain visible and correspond closely to the standard oath required under President Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction proclamations following the Confederate surrender, including language pledging support for the Constitution of the United States and adherence to emancipation-related laws and proclamations. The signature line appears to reference “T.A.G. Wade” as Justice of the Peace.
Point Lookout, Maryland, referenced in the family annotation, was among the largest Union prisoner-of-war camps for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. The association with Point Lookout imprisonment and postwar Reconstruction documentation gives the archive notable historical interest.
Due to fading, age, and the lightness of the manuscript ink, portions of both documents are difficult to decipher and the transcription remains tentative in places. Presented framed under glass.
