Shield-form badge bearing the inscription “JUSTICE OF THE PEACE – ATHERTON, CALIF.” with black enamel lettering and decorative engraved background. The reverse is marked “P. & M. K. Co.” and serial numbered 066969, retaining its original pin-back attachment. Manufactured by P. & M. K. Co. (Pasquale & Mazzuca Krew Company) of Los Angeles, a noted California maker of law enforcement, fire service, and civic insignia, the badge represents a period when municipalities commissioned locally produced identification badges for judicial and governmental officials. Justice of the Peace courts historically handled minor criminal matters, warrants, traffic offenses, and civil disputes prior to California’s judicial reorganization. Badges from small Peninsula communities such as Atherton are infrequently encountered and represent a now-obsolete level of local government and judicial administration.
