A rare and exceptional five-piece cased cutlery and wine service set by legendary San Francisco cutler Michael Price, renowned for his frontier-era knives and weapons. This exhibition-grade boxed set includes a large carving knife, meat fork, sharpening steel, corkscrew, and a champagne bottle saber or foil cutter—all mounted with matching ivory handles, engraved in Gothic script with the initial “W.”
The carving knife is clearly marked “M. PRICE / SAN FRANCISCO,” denoting manufacture at his well-documented shop operating from the 1850s through the 1880s. Price was known for producing fine edged tools, Bowie knives, and gentleman’s sporting sets, many of which were retailed to the Gold Rush elite and affluent Californians. The inclusion of a champagne saber—a rare form typically used to pop corks by slicing the bottle neck—suggests this was made for a person of considerable status and social flair.
The original fitted leather-covered case is lined in padded burgundy silk, now gently age-faded. The presence of all five original pieces in excellent condition is highly unusual for Michael Price sets, which were typically disassembled or separated over time.
Length of carving knife: ±15 1/2 in.
Case dimensions (closed): ±19 x 6 1/2 x 3 1/4 in.
