Archive grouping consisting of a large framed portrait photograph, accompanied by a separate period Bowie-style knife and an 1865 military travel pass issued by the Office of the Provost Marshal, District No. 1, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Accompanying the portrait is a period Bowie-form knife with wooden grip scales and iron crossguard.

Also included is a partially printed military travel pass reading in part:

“Office Provost Marshal District No. 1 W. Mo.
St. Joseph, Mo., May 16, 1865…”

issued to John Bone, permitting travel across the Missouri River and signed for Major J.M. Bassett, District Provost Marshal.

Three items preserved together as a group and believed to relate to Confederate-associated activity in western Missouri during the immediate aftermath of the Civil War surrender. St. Joseph and the surrounding Missouri border region were deeply tied to Confederate and guerrilla activity throughout the Civil War period.
