A whimsical and expressive 19th-century Continental character cane featuring a finely carved ivory handle in the form of a smiling elderly man’s head adorned with a cap or headscarf. The ivory handle is rich with personality, showcasing deep facial creases, prominent cheekbones, and a wry smile, all meticulously rendered with careful attention to detail. Below the head is a turned ivory collar mounted with a narrow brass ring. The upper shaft is sheathed in a textured and stained metal overlay, showing traces of oxidation, leading into a tapering wooden shaft with a deep grain and signs of honest use. This cane is a charming example of folk carving infused with humor and realism.
