A fine French-made officer’s saber with a richly decorated blue and gold blade, dating to circa 1800. The saber features an elegantly curved blade with a single fuller, bearing a dramatic blue ground and gilt motifs on the upper half—floral designs, trophies of arms, and a bugle horn emblem—retaining approximately 95% of the original decoration. The ricasso is arc-stamped “Solingen”, indicating high-quality German blade manufacture for export to the French or American market. The hilt is distinguished by a “snake” eagle-head pommel, with downturned guard and plain knuckle bow. The grip is finely checkered ebony, with a gilt ferrule of leaf design and a feathered backstrap descending from the eagle’s neck. A remnant of a red felt washer remains where blade meets hilt, and a small felt pad is affixed to the underside of the guard. There is no scabbard present. This style of saber—often associated with American militia and light infantry officers—was produced in France and Germany for export during the late 18th to early 19th century, and was a favored sidearm during the War of 1812 and Napoleonic conflicts. Overall Length: 35 1/8 in. Blade Length: 30 in. Pick up and Shipping: Free pickup in Gardnerville, NV. FedEx Ground/Home shipping within the continental U.S.: $75 + 1.5% insurance (unless waived in writing). Combined shipping available.

Condition

About excellent. Minor wear to the gilt finish on the brass hilt; the ebony grip remains sharp and intact. Blade is mostly bright with light staining toward the point. Blue and gold etching remains strong and vibrant with only slight fading.
