A fine early example of the German Iron Cross 2nd Class from the Franco-Prussian War, flat form, with magnetic iron core and silver frame. The obverse bears the crowned “W” cipher above the date 1870, representing Kaiser Wilhelm I, while the reverse (not shown) would typically feature oak leaves and the date 1813, referencing the order’s Napoleonic origins. The reverse of this cross is maker-marked “J. Wagner R.S.,” with “14 Loth” purity marking for silver content. Instituted in 1870 by King Wilhelm I of Prussia, the Iron Cross recognized gallantry in the field during the unification wars that led to the creation of the German Empire. Approx. 1.375 x 1.375 in. Provenance: The Estate of Walter Redling, Encino, Ca. Pickup & Shipping: This lot may be picked up free of charge in Gardnerville, NV. It can also be delivered to the Annex Auctions facility for pick up in Sacramento for $25 pre invoice. Shipping via FedEx within the continental U.S. for $50 + 1.5% insurance (unless waived in writing). Combined lot shipping available.
