A distinctive vaulted example of the German Iron Cross 1st Class from World War I, with a rare “stacked” double-cross construction. The obverse displays a magnetic iron core within a silver frame, bearing the crowned “W” cipher and the date 1914. The reverse features a screwback fitting stamped “500” and accompanied by a D.R.G.M. 653146 backing disc marked “800” for silver content. The stacked design, occasionally referred to as a “double-frame” issue, was a privately purchased variation offering greater depth and rigidity, often favored by officers. Instituted in 1914, this award recognized acts of valor or distinguished leadership in the field.
