A World War I Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse), instituted in 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II as Germany’s premier decoration for acts of bravery and military merit in combat. The obverse displays the crowned “W” cypher of Wilhelm II above the date “1914,” framed within a raised beaded border and blackened iron core with silvered frame. The reverse features a flat back with vertical pinback clasp and is maker marked “KO” (Königliches Münzamt Orden, Berlin). Constructed in a two-piece design with magnetic iron core and silver frame, this example is a flat form, typical of early wartime issue.
