A World War I Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse), instituted in 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II as Germany’s principal decoration for battlefield bravery and leadership. The obverse shows the crowned “W” cypher of Wilhelm II above the date “1914,” surrounded by a raised beaded border showing a warm gilt-toned patina to the frame, with a blackened iron core. The reverse features a convex or vaulted form with screwback fitting—an uncommon wartime type favored by officers for wear on the tunic. This unmarked piece, with no maker’s stamp behind the screw disc, is typical of private-purchase officer-grade issues.
Approx. 1.75 x 1.75 in.
