A World War I Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse), instituted in 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II as Germany’s principal decoration for bravery and leadership in combat. The obverse bears the crowned “W” cypher of Wilhelm II above the date “1914,” framed by a raised beaded silver border surrounding the blackened iron core. The reverse features a vaulted form with vertical pinback clasp, a design favored by officers for a more contoured fit when worn on the tunic. Unmarked, of three-piece construction with magnetic core and silver frame, this piece reflects the classic wartime manufacture and finish quality of early issues.
