A World War I Iron Cross 1st Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse), instituted in 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II as Germany’s principal decoration awarded for acts of bravery, leadership, or distinguished service in battle. The obverse displays the crowned “W” cypher of Wilhelm II above the date “1914,” surrounded by a raised beaded silver frame over a blackened iron core. The reverse features a vaulted form with a vertical pinback clasp and hinge, bearing a faint, partially worn maker’s mark near the hinge. Constructed in the traditional three-piece method with magnetic core and silver frame, this is a typical officer-grade wartime issue retaining much of its original finish.
