A World War I Prussian Observer’s Badge (Beobachterabzeichen), instituted in 1913 for qualified aircraft observers of the Imperial German Air Service who demonstrated skill and reliability in aerial reconnaissance and navigation. The obverse shows a detailed openwork wreath composed of laurel and oak leaves, surmounted by the Imperial crown, surrounding a central black, white, and red enamel checkerboard observer’s emblem symbolizing aerial signal coordination. Constructed in silver with fine die-struck detail, the reverse is marked C. E. Juncker Berlin beneath the Prussian crown and stamped “800” for silver content. The badge features a vertical pinback clasp with hinge and catch intact, and radiating sunburst pattern to the reverse field. This is a quality private-purchase wartime issue typical of Juncker’s craftsmanship. Approx. 2.825 x 1.75 in. Provenance: The Estate of Walter Redling, Encino, Ca.
