A World War I Iron Cross 2nd Class, with blackened iron core and silver frame. The obverse bears the crowned “W” cipher of Kaiser Wilhelm II over the date “1914,” while the reverse shows the crowned “FW” cipher for Friedrich Wilhelm III above oak leaves and the date “1813.” This example is suspended from a black-and-white combatant’s ribbon fitted with a chain hanger and adorned with a silver Luftwaffe-style eagle device mounted to the ribbon. The Iron Cross 2nd Class was widely awarded for individual acts of bravery or leadership in combat, though this enhanced ribbon with device makes the piece less common.
