A World War I German Iron Cross 2nd Class with blackened iron core and silver frame. The obverse bears the crowned “W” cipher of Kaiser Wilhelm II over the date “1914,” while the reverse shows the crowned “FW” cipher of Friedrich Wilhelm III, oak leaves, and the date “1813,” marking the decoration’s Napoleonic-era institution. This example is mounted to an Austro-Hungarian triangular black-and-white ribbon, further adorned with a gilt Austrian eagle device and crossed swords emblem above a miniature Iron Cross. The Iron Cross 2nd Class was awarded across ranks for bravery or distinguished leadership in battle.
