H.S. Brown Retailer J.P. Clabrough Double Barrel Damascus Hammer Shotgun. 10 gauge, 32" barrels, serial number 88, circa 1884. J.P. Clabrough external hammer 10 Gauge double barrel damascus shotgun, "H.S. Brown" retailer marked. Serial number 88, If it is Clabrough's serial number and not the customer's, the gun would have been made circa 1884, using the low hammer series of serial numbers. Barrel top rib engraved "H. S. BROWN'S SPECIAL FINE DAMASCUS". The locks are engraved "H. S. BROWN". This was a trade name used by the Hibbart, Spencer, Bartlett & Co, a large hardware wholesale dealer in Chicago, Illinois. The barrels have three Birmingham proof marks and the 1875-1887 choke proof mark NOT FOR BALL. The action flat is stamped "J. P. CLABROUGH & BROS." and "MAKERS PATENT ACTION". Has a doll's head top rib extension, a Deeley and Edge fore-arm latch, and a hard rubber grip cap, and a "CLABROUGH DUCK & QUAIL TRADE MARK" butt plate. The gun has a walnut stock with drop points, fluted toe of comb, and nicely checkered, modest metal engraving. There is a vacant German silver escutcheon on the belly of the butt stock. This gun is published on page 206 of J.P. Clabrough Birmingham Gunmaker by Lawrence P. Shelton Dimensions: 49" long overall. This firearm is antique and does not require special licensing. Condition

Overall very good condition. Damascus has faded overall, some light staining. Small dings and scratches on metal. Bores have some light wear. Would have had a hard rubber fore end cap, this is now missing. Chip missing from bottom point of the butt plate. Stock has light dents and scratches.
