J.P. Clabrough & Bros double barrel damascus shotgun, 10 gauge,
30.75" barrels, s
erial number 2991, circa 1880s.
Medium-grade, side-lever opening, high hammer gun.
It has no chokes and a single locking bolt, acting on the rear lump. It is stamped with the three standard 1855-1904 Birmingham proof marks and stamped 11 for bore size (there is no choke proof mark stamp). The barrel rib is engraved "J. P. CLABROUGH & BROS. LONDON LAMINATED STEEL". The fore-end fastener is the Scott long lever patent of 1876.
The gun has screw-in firing pins with hexagon head, and a carved fence between hammer and firing pin. All metal has medium quality engraving except the metal butt plate, which is plain. The rebounding locks are stamped on the inside JOINT PATENT STANTON & CO. and B51709 on the right lock and B51710 on the left lock.
The stock is walnut with some nice grain in the butt stock. It has a Prince of Wales style grip that is metal capped, and a vacant German silver shield escutcheon on the underside of the butt stock. The German silver ribbon inlaid on the cheek side of the butt is inscribed "JACOB ANKENER", undoubtedly a prize gun at a shoot. Ankener was a glass ball, bat, live pigeon and trap shooter in Sacramento, CA in the 1870s and 1880s.
