Carved marine mammal ivory whistle (identified here as walrus ivory, based on appearance), finely scrimshaw-engraved with Ellis’s distinctive anchor-and-rope crest/insignia—an emblem closely associated with his maritime life and seen across related personal effects from the Ellis archive. A vivid survivor from early San Francisco civic history: Ellis came to California in 1849, worked as a gold miner and ship captain, joined the San Francisco Police Department in 1855, and rose to become Chief of Police from 1875–1877; in the pre-radio era, a chief’s whistle served as an essential signaling tool to summon assistance and coordinate response on the street.
