This finely carved cane, attributed to late Meiji-period Japan, features a full-bodied owl perched confidently on a natural ledge amid an abundant tangle of oversized leaves and acorn clusters. The carving is executed in high relief with exceptional detail, especially in the owl’s feather texture, facial features, and the naturalistic foliage. The subject reflects the Japanese reverence for nature and symbolic animals, with the owl often representing protection and insight. The handle is fashioned from a naturally curved section of boxwood; its surface carved to resemble tree bark and is capped with a polished ivory disk. The upper shaft continues the woodland motif before transitioning into a tightly wrapped dark brown ray skin (shagreen) shaft. A fluted ring collar, carved from antler or bone, separates the carved section from the plain shaft and complements the natural material palette. The cane terminates in a horn or stag antler ferrule.
