Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The scene features both commanding officers at center beneath a sprawling tree, surrounded by their staff officers and distant troop formations. The lower margin is printed with the title “The Surrender of General Lee, And His Entire Army to Lieut. General Grant, April 9th 1865,” and includes the copyright line: “Entered according to an Act of Congress in the year 1865 by John Smith in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.”
