Portrait miniature depicting Confederate General Robert E. Lee (1807–1870) in gray double-breasted uniform with gilt buttons and collar stars, presented under glass in a boldly decorated black-and-white framed mount with inked scrollwork and hanging loop; the verso retains manuscript letter fragments used as backing. Lee was a career U.S. Army officer before the Civil War, rising to prominence as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia; his surrender to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in April 1865 effectively ended major Confederate military resistance, and he later became president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University).
