A visually striking and exceptionally rare 5 lb. rectangular powder tin featuring bold red paint and an ornate printed label reading “Mathewson’s Superior Rifle Gun Powder.” The illustrated hunting scene shows birds in flight and a spaniel retrieving in a richly engraved natural setting, framed by classical scrollwork. Tins from Mathewson are seldom encountered, and this example—with its bright coloration and near-complete original label—is a standout among 19th-century powder packaging. These tins were likely produced for the competitive and sporting market, distributed through regional arms dealers in the East and Midwest. Dimensions: Approx. 5 in. wide x 5 in. deep x 6 ½ in. high Pickup & Shipping: This lot may be picked up free of charge in Gardnerville, NV. It can also be delivered to the Annex Auctions facility for pick up in Sacramento for $25, or shipped via FedEx or USPS within the continental U.S. for $70. Combined lot shipping is typically discounted.
