A rare and visually arresting early American officer’s saber dating to circa 1810, featuring a highly decorated blue and gold blade and a finely executed eaglehead pommel. The eagle is notably more delicate and detailed than typical for this style—its features including a crest opposite the beak and deeply hand-engraved neck feathers, suggesting high craftsmanship and possibly custom work.
The hilt features a reverse “P” guard with shield-shaped langets and a grip carved in descending vertical grooves, terminating in a gilt brass ferrule with ropework detail. The grip is of natural material (likely bone or ivory), aged to a warm tone. The curved blade is a standout: deep blue and brilliant gold decoration covers roughly two-thirds of its length, alternating with bright etched panels.
Blade motifs include:
A wreathed “Warranted” mark
An eagle with Union shield (15 stars) and ribbon in beak
A liberty pole with cap and stand of arms
A standing classical female figure leaning on a pillar, unusually detailed and elegant—suggesting allegorical reference to Liberty or Columbia
Overall Length: 36 in., Blade Length: 31 in.

Condition
Very good. A crack runs along the reverse grip but appears stable. Blue and gilt are exceptionally strong with only light fading. Bright panels show mild fingerprint oxidation and one line of edge rust near the point, along with two small nicks. Two felt pads are present (one glued to the langet, the other to the blade flat). The sword remains tight and straight. No scabbard.
