A striking early American officer’s saber, notable for its distinctive five-ball hilt configuration and exceptionally preserved blue and gold blade. The hilt features a brass D-guard with five spherical embellishments on both the knuckle bow and side guard. The eaglehead pommel is crested, with a brass bolt cap visible at the tang’s termination. The grip is carved from reeded bone, exhibiting a warm, aged tone.
The curved blade is deeply blued along the upper two-thirds, brilliantly offset by gilt floral and martial motifs. These include:
A pole with Liberty Cap at the ricasso
A stand of arms with cannon, armor, spear with pennon, and shield
Gold edging lines both the back and cutting edge of the blade
A single fuller runs the length of the blade, tapering toward the point
Despite the lack of scabbard, this sword stands out for the near-pristine condition of its blade—rare among early 19th-century U.S. officer sabers.
Overall Length: 34 in., Blade Length: 28 ¾ in.
