A fine and likely French-made American eaglehead officer’s saber, dating to circa 1810. The hilt features a reverse “P” guard, detailed with laurel leaf decoration below the eagle’s beak and shield-shaped langets, one of which bears an American eagle with a Union shield on its breast—an early iconography of U.S. patriotism. The grip is carved spiral bone, finished with a plain brass ferrule.
The blade is long and elegantly curved, with deep blue and gold decoration across the upper half. On one side, the gilt motifs include a trophy of arms with a Liberty Cap, while the ricasso features a stand of arms with cannon and polearms. A gold line traces the back and edge of the blade. The blueing remains dark and brilliant on the reverse; slightly faded on the obverse.
Overall Length: 34 ¬Ω in., Blade Length: 29 ¬Ω in.

Condition
Very good plus to excellent overall. There is a chip below the pommel and a small crack on the reverse side of the grip. No gilt remains on the brass hilt. The blade retains most of its polish in the bright portion, with minor surface rust on the edge and flats, and fading in the blue near the langet. No scabbard.
