U.S. Springfield Model 1855 .58 caliber Percussion Pistol-Carbine. Has 11 6/16" barrel, NSN, Dated 1856. Finished in the white with wood stock. Detachable butt stock not present.
These were made between 1855-1857. The interesting feature of this piece is that it employs Maynard tape primers. This was a system designed by Dr. Edward Maynard, a dentist with an interest in firearms. The percussion material was glued to paper making a roll of caps. These Maynard caps are still recognizable today as the same paper cap rolls they sell to use with modern cap guns with very minor changes. Springfield Armory manufactured 4,021 of these and it was the last single shot pistol made for the U.S military.
