A scarce and historically significant ½ lb. oval powder tin from the California Powder Works, boldly labeled “Union Gunpowder.” The embossed design includes the State Seal of California on the reverse and radiant typography across the front face. Produced in the post-Civil War period, these tins were among the first locally manufactured gunpowder products for the Western market. This example retains its original cap, secured with an aged strip of red cloth. Powder tins from California Powder Works—especially those bearing the San Francisco address—are seldom encountered today.
