A fine gilt and enameled Austrian pilot’s qualification badge from the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The badge features a gilt eagle in flight over a green enameled oak leaf wreath surmounted by the imperial crown with red and white enamel detailing. The lower shield bears the red initials “FJ I” on a white field. The reverse shows a long vertical pinback with functional hinge and catch. Awarded to qualified military pilots of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during World War I in recognition of completion of flight training and certification as an army pilot.
