A World War I Imperial German, Bavarian Observer’s Badge (Beobachterabzeichen), instituted in 1913 and awarded to qualified aerial observers for completion of observer training and operational reconnaissance service. The obverse depicts a red and black enameled observer’s target square within a laurel and oak wreath, surmounted by the Bavarian crown and tied at the base with a bow. Constructed of finely die-struck hollow silver, the reverse bears the maker’s mark of Carl Poellath, Schrobenhausen and is engraved with a personal inscription reading “Meinem Lieben Alois wünsch ich die sicherste Wolke Deine Leni Ostern 1918” (“To my dear Alois, I wish you the safest cloud, your Leni, Easter 1918”). The piece is fitted with a vertical pinback clasp with hinge and catch intact, exhibiting the high-quality craftsmanship typical of Poellath’s Bavarian workshop. Approx. 3 x 1.75 in.
