Instituted during the First World War to honor qualified airship observers and crewmen of the Imperial German Aviation Corps, recognizing exceptional performance and skill aboard reconnaissance and patrol airships. The badge depicts an airship in flight across the center, framed by a detailed oval wreath of laurel and oak leaves surmounted by the Prussian crown. This piece is of silver construction, marked on the reverse with “800” for silver content and a boxed “4” (Vienna maker’s mark). The design is finely die-struck with crisp detail and features a vertical pinback clasp with hinge and catch intact. Typical of wartime officer-grade issues, the piece exhibits excellent relief and traditional Austrian craftsmanship.
