Instituted during the First World War by the German Empire to recognize qualified aerial gunners and observers who demonstrated skill and valor in combat. The badge features a finely detailed crowned double wreath, laurel to the left and oak to the right, surrounding a central motif of an eagle in flight above a gun sight device, symbolizing precision and aerial marksmanship. The Prussian Crown at top of badge. This badge is die-struck and of hollow construction in silver, bearing a hallmark and stamped “800” for silver purity on the reverse. The vertical pinback clasp is intact, with moderate patina and traces of verdigris near the catch.
