WWII U.S. Navy Archive of Lieutenant (JG) Earl Edward Walsh, SN 323941. Walsh enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve as an aviation cadet on 11/13/1942, service number 559-97-14. He requested discharge from USNR and received it on 6/21/1943. He went active duty Navy from 11/15/1943 to 7/27/1946. His ship was the attack cargo ship USS Torrance (AKA-76). She has a battle star, was involved at Okinawa, and her crews are credited with downing at least 2 enemy aircraft. She was attacked by kamikaze planes and boats. Post war the ship was sold into civilian cargo service and was eventually scrapped in 1972.
This archive is a full footlocker group packed with primarily things from his military service; His hats, some equipment and navigational tools, dog tags, a diary, photos, documents, certificates, letters, some orders, maps/ charts, pamphlets, publications, manuals, as well as other miscellaneous bits of memorabilia from his service. Finally he does have several souvenirs: two Japanese bayonets and two USN fighting knives, and a trench art ash tray made of a 40mm shell and filipino coins for the cigarette holders. This is a very comprehensive historical grouping. Mr Walsh was born September 22nd, 1921 and died September 17th, 2013.
A final note: Mr. Walsh had two souvenir Arisaka rifles, those are listed separately in this auction.
