Scarce 1857-dated U.S. military powder flask by Batty of Springfield, Massachusetts. The copper body is deeply embossed with the Federal eagle over crossed flags and “US” shield, surrounded by 20 stars and the clasped-hands motif symbolizing unity. The top is clearly stamped BATTY / 1857 / SPRINGFIELD MASS, flanked by two authentic U.S. Ordnance inspection marks: “J.H.” above the date (attributed to inspector John Hawkins) and “R.H.K.W.” below (for Robert Henry Kirkwood Whiteley, principal inspector). These marks confirm official government acceptance during the 1857 production year. The flask was standard issue with U.S. rifle and musket sets during the mid-19th century, including early militia and pre–Civil War service arms. The surface retains a rich, untouched dark bronze patina. Dimensions approx.: 9.75 × 4.25 × 1.5 in. Provenance: The Al and Carol Cali Collection. Pickup & Shipping: This lot may be picked up free of charge in Gardnerville, NV. It can also be delivered to the Annex Auctions facility for pick up in Sacramento for $25 pre invoice. Shipping via FedEx within the continental U.S. for $50 + 1.5% insurance (unless waived in writing). Combined lot shipping available.
