An exceptionally detailed, firsthand Union soldier’s field diary kept by G. L. Story, Company B, 1st Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, covering movements, battles, skirmishes, marches, and daily life from 1863 through 1865. Written in a small leather-bound pocket notebook, the diary records Story’s active service through Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama, including participation in the Knoxville Campaign, the defense of Cumberland Gap, skirmishing preceding and during the Siege of Knoxville, the advance on Atlanta, and the pursuit of Confederate cavalry forces.

Story provides meticulous day-by-day entries detailing troop movements, road and river crossings, supply challenges, named officers, skirmish lines, artillery exchanges, and casualties within his own company. He references Gen. Burnside, Gen. Wilcox, Gen. Hartsuff, and others, and documents close-quarter actions including:

  • The army’s response to Morgan’s Raiders
  • Fighting at and around Cumberland Gap
  • The Clinch River engagements
  • Daily entries during the Knoxville siege
  • Skirmishing throughout the Atlanta Campaign, including railroad destruction and bridge operations
  • Later movements in Tennessee and Alabama, including pursuit of Gen. Wheeler’s cavalry

Included is Story’s original CDV portrait, inscribed “1863 / G. L. Story”, along with internal notes listing his issued gear (e.g. “Belt No. 12,” “Carbine 16261,” etc.). A rare surviving example of a continuous field diary from a Western Theater infantryman.
