Original six-count packet of seamless skin cartridges manufactured by D.C. Sage of Middletown, Connecticut, for the .36 caliber Whitney Navy Pistol. The label reads “Hotchkiss’ Patent, Feb. 11th, 1862,” referring to the patent covering the use of animal membrane “skin” cases that were more durable and moisture resistant than combustible paper types. These cartridges represent a significant wartime development in percussion ammunition technology and were widely issued to Union forces during the Civil War.
