Rare English Engraved Warner 2nd Model Carbine in .56-50 Spencer cal.. Has 20" barrel, Serial no. 1048, Barrel blue with silver plated brass receiver. Has walnut stock.
Warner Calvary carbine with engraved silver plated receiver and checkered stock and forearm. Receiver is marked: "Greene Rifle Works/Worchester, Mass. Pat. Feb 1864". The barrel, receiver is engraved with London retailer information "R.J. Chamberlin Grace Church St. London". The receiver is decorated with well executed scroll engraving. The buttplate also is silver plated. Both the stock and forearm have deep, well executed checkering. The Greene Rifle Works produced Warner Carbines were from the second US Ordnance Department contract for Warner Carbines, but were delivered too late for Civil War use. The guns were sold as surplus and most were acquired by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York, who subsequently sold them to the French for the Franco-Prussian War. Many apparently never arrived before the end of the war or saw little use and based upon extant examples a large number were then sold to England, where they received London commercial proof marks like this example. The engraving and silver plating were done in England and the gun was sold by Robert John Chamberlin, who worked as a gun maker and retailer circa 1874-1880. Chamberlin was located at 81A Grace Church Street circa 1877-1880 and the decorated gun was likely intended for sale to a wealthy client or possibly as a presentation piece.

Condition
Overall Very fine. Action functions mechanically. The barrel has a dark patina finish overall with some minor pitting. The receiver retains a little under half of the original plated finish which has dulled to gray. The bore is excellent. The stock is fine with crisp checkering and only minor wear.
