Well-made bronze War Merit Cross Second Class with Swords, instituted in 1939 to recognize wartime service and merit not directly qualifying for combat awards, with the addition of crossed swords indicating actions connected with military operations. The cross features pebbled arms with a central medallion bearing a swastika within a wreath, with the reverse displaying the date “1939.” The decoration is suspended from a ribbon showing the traditional red, white, and black pattern typical of the period. The suspension ring bears the maker’s mark "74," attributed to Wächtler & Lange of Mittweida.
