A World War I German Iron Cross 1st Class, pin-back version. The obverse shows the blackened iron core with raised silver frame, bearing the crowned “W” cipher of Kaiser Wilhelm II above the date “1914.” The reverse features a solid silver backplate with horizontal pin, hinge, and catch. It is stamped with a crowned eagle acceptance mark near the top and “KAG” (for Königliches Münzamt, Stuttgart) at the bottom. The Iron Cross 1st Class was awarded for repeated acts of bravery or outstanding leadership in combat, ranking above the 2nd Class decoration.
