Obverse with blackened iron core bearing crowned “W” and date “1914.” Reverse fitted with screwback disc and post assembly. Screwback version was privately purchased by officers who preferred a more secure attachment than the pin-back type. Awarded for acts of bravery or leadership in combat during World War I.
